“However much dark it gets, it only makes a stronger case for the eternal and invincible presence of Light."
- Nivedita Dey

“However much dark it gets, it only makes a stronger case for the eternal and invincible presence of Light."

Whimsical and wise, reflective and poignant, Nivedita Dey poems are a contrast to the gloomy poetry of our age, even while delving into the darkest recesses. She passionately declares space for poetry’s possibilities and promises.

Larkspur Lane : Branched Labyrinths of the Mind

Larkspur Lane : Branched Labyrinths of the Mind is a collection of more than two hundred poems, rich in the diversity of themes, subjects, moods, forms, and poetic vision.

The collection has been divided into primarily seven categories of poems, and another short, sneak peak one. Readers encounter a multitude of themes and moods ranging from childhood, memory, decadence love, betrayal, hope, humanism, nostalgia, rage, delirious mental battles and the serenity and empowerment in Transcendence.

The voice of the poet is brutally honest and unapologetic; at times jovially cocky, and at other times introspective and mature in her acceptance of it all. The collection presents almost an all-encompassing kaleidoscope of Life, both at the micro and macro levels of the flow.

“Labyrinth” is a confused and luxurious word, rich in metaphorical implications. Its immediate meaning is a maze, but metaphorically it could stand for an emotional knot we intend to unravel, a mental puzzle, or life’s journey itself. Dey’s collection encapsulates all these meanings, including searching for lost love as a means to return to oneself.

Prufrock in his lovesong sees the mermaids ride seaward. What he does not see is the left behind broken seashore. Nivedita Dey, in her poems, tries to “fix with cello tape this vast broken seashore”. There are word plays, puns, enjambments, literary allusions in her poems but what is paramount is the searing honest expressions of poetry. Here she presents “an empty stretch of eternity” for you to fill with your imagination.

The mind’s a maze where our deepest thoughts often crouch. Thoughts we hide even from ourselves. Nivedita’s poetry brings them out; rawest wounds are bared; the reader’s left out of breath. And then, her poems gently raise us from our hurting selves, and show us the doorway to the universe of light and hope. Larkspur Lane is a collection that speaks in a voice that’s neither sympathizing, nor judgemental. It doesn’t speak from a high pedestal. It’s a voice that we hear everyday but don’t listen to really. It’s our very own inner voice. And it tells us we’re never alone.
